Workers' Compensation and Condos in Saskatchewan

WCB- WHO WE ARE

We are the provincial agency that delivers workplace insurance to Saskatchewan employers and benefits to Saskatchewan workers when they are hurt at work. Our legislation, The Workers' Compensation Act, 2013, describes the workplaces that we cover and the benefits we provide. We are a monopoly. This means that employers in industries that are mandated by our Act must insure through us. Employers in industries excluded by our Act may apply for coverage. It also means that workers injured in an industry mandated by our Act can claim benefits from us.

The Basics: What is a Work Injury?

A work injury is the result of any work-related event that causes a need for medical treatment and/or time away from work.

If you are an employer who has had one or more workers injured at work, you are legally required to report the injuries.

An employer must report it to the WCB within five days by submitting the the Employer’s Initial Report of Injury (E1) form.

What is Workers” Compensation?

Workers’ compensation is a no-fault insurance system that protects both employers and workers from the results of workplace injuries. Employers are protected against lawsuits and injured workers receive benefits.

These benefits are paid for by employers through the assessment of premiums.

The Workers’ Compensation Act, 2013, together with the General Regulations and Exclusions, make up the laws under which the WCB operates.

Who Needs to Register?

Under The Workers’ Compensation Act, 2013 (the Act); all employers operating in Industries covered under the Act who hire workers on a regular, casual or contract basis, must register and create an account with WCB.

Are Condo Corporations required to register?

Condo Corporations are a mandatory industry and are required to register if they hire workers or contractors. If registration does not occur within 30 days of employing workers, a late registration penalty will be applied.

Condominium owners pay fees to the Corporation which can include; maintenance of common areas, sewer services, waste removal, building repairs, etc.
